Help for Liberal Arts Majors

Marketing your liberal arts degree to an employer means making the connection directly between your major and the job you're seeking.

For instance, don't say, "My history major directly relates to your marketing position." Instead, be specific about courses, skills, and how they apply to the job: "My history major has prepared me for a position in marketing through its emphasis on careful research and analysis of the facts. I completed a field project in..."

This means that you need to have a clear understanding of what you want—a specific type of position—and why you are the right candidate for the job. Here are some suggestions on how to get there:

Provide a focused objective on your resume.
Liberal arts majors' resumes are often unfocused. That makes it difficult for the employer to figure out what the student wants to do. A prospective employer is not a career counselor and can—and probably won't—spend the time trying to figure out what position matches your qualifications. It's up to you to do that. Developing a focused objective for your resume "forces you to think about the specific job and why you're applying for it. that puts you one step closer to being able to connect your qualifications with the position requirements.

Focus on the job requirements and provide evidence that you have the necessary skills and abilities to perform the job duties. This is not easy—plan to put in time and effort—but will pay off in the long run. If you can show that you have business sense, analytical skills, and communication skills, then you will be competitive.

Make the connection in your cover letter as well as on your resume. Tell the employer why you are interested in a particular position, and make the connection between your education and experience and the position. Help the employer understand why you are applying.
